Below is a great video on legislating morality with Frank Turek.

Key quote:

All laws legislate morality, the only question is, whose morality?

  1. I agree that there are some USA citizens, from various religious political and philosophical traditions, who are lobbying for laws that reflect their viewpoints. However, what needs to be kept in mind is that ALL adult USA citizens have the freedom both OF and FROM religion, according to the First Amendment. When viewed objectively, the First Amendment does indeed create some social complications. For example, a USA citizen who wishes to, say, have the USA become a Christian theocracy or implement Sharia law will not have this wish fulfilled — as individuals in our society have freedom from religion. However, a USA citizen does have the right to adopt a particular religion for him, his wife (significant other in politically correct language) and his children. This is what freedom of religion means.

What does all this mean? In the USA, an adult has the right to adopt whatever religion he wants. However, neither individuals nor religious groups have the right to have the USA government’s laws correspond to their particular beliefs.
