As widely reported last week, Michael Sam, heralded last year as the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL, has stepped away from professional football for now, citing concerns about his “mental health.” (At the time of the announcement, he was playing for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.)

I discovered a surprising silver lining to the recent controversy over Bishop T.D. Jakes “evolved and evolving” comments about homosexuality, beginning with his unequivocal reiteration of his view “that marriage is ordained by God as a union between a man and a woman” and “that all sex outside of that sacred union is sin and that would include but is not limited to, homosexuality.”

In yet another example of today’s ongoing war on the “gender binary” (meaning, dividing the human race into male and female), the University of California has announced that incoming students will be able to choose from six different categories of gender identification: “male, female, trans male, trans female, gender queer/gender non-conforming and different identity.”
